Civic Engagement Connections
Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology recently concluded a week of service activities in celebration of our founder's birthday with a great turnout from the college community. Held April 2-5, these service events not only honored Thaddeus Stevens' legacy but also reinforced the college’s commitment to enhancing student lives through civic engagement.
During this special week, various groups across the college, including academic departments, sports teams, and staff from different offices came together to complete meaningful service projects throughout Lancaster County. The activities ranged from environmental conservation efforts, such as local park and waterways clean-ups, to community support initiatives, including food and clothing banks and volunteering at animal rescues. One group of students built benches out of train wheels ands repaired a 100-year-old steam coach frame. Architecture students hosted several in-classroom activities for local fifth graders. Another group planned Earth Day activities for second year elementary schoolers. Some students picked up trash from the local parks and trails. Others read to young students, and helped with meal prepping for those in need.
The Civic Engagement Committee worked to encourage the projects, ensuring a wide impact across Lancaster. Feedback from the community and participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the College’s efforts. As the college reflects on the success of this initiative, plans are already underway to expand next year’s service activities, aiming to involve even more community partners and increase the scope of volunteer efforts. This ongoing tradition continues to inspire students, staff, and faculty!
