Developmental Programs
Entry into any Developmental Program at Thaddeus Stevens College is based on an evaluation of high school transcripts, PSSA score and a placement test. Upon completion of the test, students will be notified by the Office of Admissions as to whether or not a Developmental Program is necessary. These are not options that students can choose on their own as a program of study.
Developmental Studies
Students whose placement evaluation scores indicate that they have not developed the necessary skills in reading, writing and/or mathematics must successfully complete Developmental Studies courses before enrolling in credit-bearing courses. Success in a remedial course is indicated by a grade of "C" or better.
Students needing developmental work will be scheduled for remedial courses during a summer session (see below) or during their first academic year.
Remedial courses may not replace any required or elective general education courses designated as counting toward a degree. Grades earned for developmental courses will not be used in calculating a students GPA.
Summer Program
The Stevens Summer Program is a full semester held in late June through early August. This program, mostly for academically underprepared students, provides the opportunity to receive instruction in both credit and remedial courses. Courses include English, reading, mathematics, social science, and study skills.
Instruction in these areas prepares students for entrance into full-time programs at Stevens. In addition to general education courses, summer students also participate in personal and academic counseling sessions. At the conclusion of the summer semester, participants are evaluated for academic and personal progress. Those who successfully complete the summer program are recommended for full-time enrollment for the fall semester.
