Lancaster, PA—A $30,000 grant from The S. Dale High Family Foundation will support new equipment in the metals fabrication and welding program at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.

The grant will go toward the purchase of new ¼” capacity power shear equipment, which processes sheet and plate goods for welding and fabrication. It is vital equipment in every metals fabrication environment.

“Training our students to safely operate this necessary piece of equipment is a fundamental skill all students who expect to make a career in metals fabrication & welding require,” said Stacy Gillis, first-year instructor at the College. “Some companies process so much material in a day that they employ designated shear operators.”

The S. Dale High Family High Foundation has been instrumental in boosting Thaddeus Stevens’s metals fabrication and welding program, which doubled enrollment to 87 students this academic year. The new equipment will be housed in the North Building in the new Greiner Advanced Manufacturing Campus, where the program will be permanently located by the end of 2018.

Thaddeus Stevens’ metal fabrication and welding program has been training skilled workers since the mid-1960s. It was expanded to help meet the critical shortage of welders and sheet metal workers in the region and nationwide. In addition, a new Welding Technology program was begun in 2016.

“It is important that we support efforts that build the workforce of the future, particularly family-sustaining jobs that also contribute to the elimination of poverty in our community,” said S. Dale High. “Our business and family roots go deep here, and so we’re delighted to partner with organizations like Thaddeus Stevens College who are focused on educating students in innovative and impactful ways that result in a better quality of life for all.”

High’s support of Thaddeus Stevens goes beyond the College’s two welding programs. S. Dale and Sadie High endowed a scholarship in their name, awarded to numerous students annually.  In addition, High Industries contributed $20,000 recently through the State EITC program to two of the College’s K-12 STEM initiatives.

Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology is consistently ranked as Pennsylvania’s top technical college and awards associate degrees in 22 high-demand, skilled occupations. A full listing of programs is available at www.StevensCollege.edu.
