Academic Coach - Special Populations
(37.5 Hours/Week/100% Perkins Funding)
Role and Responsibilities
Essential role: to offer and deliver culturally competent academic supports and success strategies to special population TSCT students for the advancement of a career degree or certification; to work collaboratively with the Retention Team to prioritize students' needs and to connect these students with college and community resources as needed; and to plan and assist in the delivery of accommodations for identified students.
Responsibilities:
- Understand the complexities and challenges of special population students with a historical track record of performance gap in academic performance and credential attainment.
- Identify special population students that have an academic need and provide culturally responsive services, and track services provided.
- Implement culturally competent strategies that target performance gaps in special population students as identified by Perkins performance data.
- Provide culturally responsive academic interventions, mentoring, and appropriate guidance for assigned at-risk students
- Participate in Retention Team and other student meetings to remain abreast of students needs and issues.
- Foster professional, supportive relationships with students to support academic achievement
- Provide one-on-one individual & small group academic tutoring as needed
- Interact positively with faculty to understand courses and share ideas to best serve at-risk students
- Assist students with organizational, time management and study strategies for success
- Use Retention Module to review students with early alerts and contact them to provide intervention
- Document interventions in Retention Module
- Serve as a liaison and special populations expert to Perkins Stakeholders informing them of barriers to success, challenges, needs, and best-practices that are closing the performance gap.
- Assist with scheduling and providing learning accommodations (including proctoring tests) for students with documented accommodations
- Maintain communication with Perkins Program Coordinator about special population strategies, performance, and issues to continuously improve services.
- Utilize Jenzabar to gather pertinent information related to student demographics and performance
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Master's degree in Education or a closely related field. Experience with students in an educational setting preferred.
Preferred Skills
Strong positive communication skills; Computer skills in Microsoft Office & LMS systems.
