On Tuesday, November 21, 2018, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology dedicated the Multipurpose Activity Center (MAC) gymnasium center court to Stephen L. Powell, former member Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Board of Trustee and Head Basketball Coach at McCaskey High School.
Stephen L. “Coach” Powell, 1949- 2018, was a graduate of Chester High School and earned his teaching degree from Millersville University.
Steve was the Head Coach of J.P. McCaskey High School Boys Basketball Team for 26 years and was Assistant under Coach Horn from 1972 to 1993.
Coach Powell was the winningest basketball coach in the Lancaster-Lebanon League history. He recorded 468 wins, 13 seasons of 20 or more wins, 9 league championships, 11 section championships, and 2 district championships.
“Steve Powell was about a lot more than winning basketball games. Basketball was simply a means to an end. He believed that young people want structure, must be consistently held accountable for the decisions they make and their behavior and that they all need to be loved,” says Dr. William Griscom, President of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.
“Based on my observations over the years, that is exactly what Steve Powell gave them.”
Steve was the Founder, CEO, and President of Powell Steel in Pequea Township from 1993 to 2013. He also served as a member of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology’s Board of Trustees.
The 61,000-square foot Multipurpose Activity Center features a spacious gymnasium with a primary basketball arena, flanked by courts on either side. Two racquetball courts, an elevated 110-meter track, several coaching offices, a training center, extensive locker room facilities, and seating for approximately 2,000 highlight the center. The MAC also includes a state-of-the-art cardio area and an extensive array of free weights and a separate circuit training area, composed of numerous pin-loaded machines.
