All homes start from drawings, and the 2023/2024 Home Construction Project at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology is no exception. Alumni Jose Rodriquez, who graduated in 2023 from the Architectural Technology program, designed this past school year’s home build project! Jose’s journey from student to professional is a great example of the comprehensive education and hands-on experience provided by the College.
Jose visited the home during the spring semester, as work was nearing completion, and saw his designs come to life thanks to the hard work of second-year students from various construction-based programs. These students dedicate their entire school year to building the home as their capstone project. Under the guidance of their instructors they transform blueprints into a real structures. Our home construction projects are sold to homeowners just like any other home for sale. This past year’s project was built specifically as affordable housing.
Jose faced the daunting task of securing numerous permits and meticulously detailing the project before the start of the school year. Unlike the building work completed, the design and architectural work is not a group effort; instead, it is completed by a single student with faculty support. Thanks to Architectural Technology Instructor Jana Belack and Carpentry Instructor Mr. Snavely for their support of Jose during his work. This approach ensures that the student gains in-depth knowledge and responsibility over the project.
This experience not only honed his technical skills but also played a crucial role in helping him secure his post-graduation job as a detailer at Scenic Ridge Construction.
Second-year students typically finish most of the construction before graduation, with minor finishing touches completed later.
Several programs participate in the home build project, demonstrating the collaborative spirit of education at Thaddeus Stevens College. This hands-on project is a significant part of the students’ educational journey, providing them with real-world experience that prepares them for their future careers in construction and design.
