On October 4, 2024, friends, family, and community members gathered to celebrate the dedication of the Alex and Judy Munro Memorial Garden at Thaddeus Stevens College. This heartfelt event was more than just a formal dedication; it was a tribute to the enduring legacy of a man who dedicated his life to fostering education, opportunity, and community.
The Memorial Garden was built several years ago by College staff, led by Alex Munro, to create a relaxing, serene place for students to enjoy. After Alex Munro passed away in early 2024, the College planned to dedicate this garden to Alex and his wife, Judy.
Pam Smith, Vice President of College Advancement, emceed the event, and kicked it off by sharing the history of George Leonard, a longtime faculty member at the College
During the event, Dr. Pedro Rivera, President of Thaddeus Stevens College, expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone present, especially the Munro family, for their ongoing support of the College. He emphasized Alex Munro’s remarkable impact on Thaddeus Stevens College over the decades.
“Alex was a champion of this institution,” President Rivera stated. “His efforts created connections that not only enriched the College but have had a lasting impact on our community.”
He detailed how Alex’s vision and relationships helped expand programs and improve facilities, creating a direct link between his initiatives and the College’s current success. Rivera’s words resonated with those who understood the profound ripple effects of Alex’s contributions—not just in infrastructure but in the lives of students who benefitted from equitable access to education.
The ceremony also highlighted the collaborative spirit Alex embodied. The Memorial Garden is just one example of Alex’s drive, determination, and commitment to enhancing the College. Dr. William Griscom, the ninth president of Thaddeus Stevens College, shared with those gathered how Alex was known for moving projects forward and making things possible. Within just a few days of discussing the possibility of a garden on campus, Alex had drawn up the plans. Many of the buildings and infrastructure throughout our locations are reflective of Alex’s direct work. Alex helped build the garden with his own expertise and labor, from planting the trees to the serpentine path and bubbling ponds.
Alex’s granddaughter, Evelyn, also shared how the passion and dedication of her grandfather is still so meaningful today in the ripple effects of his legacy.
Joe Wysock III, a member of the Board of Trustees at the College, along with a leader on the Alumni Board, spoke about Alex’s significant impact on students, emphasizing how his dedication shaped the educational experiences of countless individuals. This thread of personal testimony was woven through the event, painting a picture of a man who truly cared for the well-being and futures of others.
As the ceremony drew to a close, Pam Smith, Vice President of College Advancement, who had emceed the event, invited Joe and Alex’s family members to the covered iron arch entryway, where they would officially declare the garden dedicated with a new sign installed by students. The celebration marked not just the formal dedication of the Alex and Judy Munro Memorial Garden, but also the celebration of a life well-lived—a life dedicated to empowering others.
