Samantha, a Water & Environmental Technology program major, interned at the Manheim Area Water and Sewer Authority in the Summer of 2024.
The Authority provides safe and reliable water and wastewater services in an efficient, cost effective, and environmentally friendly manner for Manheim Borough, Penn Township, and Rapho Township in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
We asked Samantha to share about her experience on the job!
How did you find out about your internship?
The instructors in my major of Water & Environmental Technology let me know about the internship opportunity.
What does your day-to-day look like at the internship?
My day-to-day looks like completing a walkthrough of the water plants, daily water testing, and then the afternoon varies with what needs to be completed each day. This could include landscaping, emptying dumpsters, PA1 calls, leak detection, and so much more!
What is something you were surprised to learn in your time as an intern?
I was surprised to learn about adding rabbit food to the ditch! This helps to treat phosphorous.
What’s been something challenging about your internship?
The biggest challenge with my internship is how hot it’s been. Being outside almost all day can get exhausting and my skin sunburns easily.
What has been the best thing about your internship experience?
My favorite things so far in my internship have been climbing the water reservoirs! I’m going to be climbing the water tower soon. I also have fun learning how to work the loaders and listening for leaks.
Tell me a story about something that happened one day as part of your time as an intern?
Once we were all setting high and low clear well alarms, and the well shut off! I caught it and I witnessed the first time they put a diatomaceous earth filter directly online without a filter change.
Would you recommend seeking out an internship to other students at TSCT? Why or why not?
I definitely recommend an internship. It is a lot of fun to learn and be hands on.
How do you think this experience will help you for your future?
This experience has made me feel more prepared for what I signed up for and has helped me know what job I will look for.
